Tyla Farm, Merthyr Mawr
145 mounted followers of the Llangeinor and Glamorgan Hunt met at the Bridgend home of local farmer and MFH , Arthur Board, to celebrate his 95th birthday on 19th November. Arthur has been Master of the Llangeinor since 1975 (37 seasons) and only gave up riding to hounds at 80.
£1080 was raised at the meet for the South Wales AirAmbulance.
He was presented with a tankard by the Glamorgan Hunt.
Born in 1917 at the Home Farm, Merthyr Mawr, during WW1 he was the youngest of 7 children and hunted for the first time aged 5.
Working the land with horses in his youth, he began riding point-to-point in 1937, winning the Glamorgan Hunt Farmers Cob Race on his 15 hh mare, Princess. He won the same race again in 1938 before WW11 stopped racing and hunting.
He funded his honeymoon to London in 1940, in the Blitz, with his wife Mary, by winning gymkhanas on Princess. When the point-to-point began again after the war, he won many winners riding against Sir Harry “Foxhunter” Llewellyn and Sir Cenydd Traherne.
He is Great- great uncle to Christian and Nikki Williams.
.He hunted firstly with the Glamorgan and later with the Llangeinor, joining the Mastership in 1975 with the late Elfyn David.
Arthur rode to hounds for 75 seasons, he was riding Master for 21 seasons and Master so far, for 37 seasons.
He has 4 children and was married for 70 years to Mary. He has 11 grandchildren, one of whom is an amateur whip to the Glamorgan, and 6 great grandchildren.
He has followed the hounds on horse or by car for 90 years...quite a record.
